Synagogue Blueprint Planning
אור החיים הקדוש · Sanctuary, learning center & community spaces
Concept templates only, not site-specific or permit-ready blueprints. They are not generated from your uploaded property and do not determine dimensions, structural safety, approved occupancy or halachic compliance. A licensed architect, engineer and your local rabbi must develop and approve the actual design before construction.
1. Ground-floor concept
An illustrative room-adjacency study, not to scale. Walls, doors, exits and Jerusalem-facing orientation must be resolved for your site.
- Sanctuary: locate the focal wall with your rabbi; maintain clear circulation around seating and the bimah.
- Learning center: dedicate shelves to physical Ohr HaChaim volumes, study tables, task lighting and accessible routes.
- Support rooms: coordinate kitchen use, accessible facilities, secure storage and community gatherings.
- Mikveh: optional reserved zone only; water systems and all halachic details require specialist design.
2. Sanctuary seating chart
100 numbered seats · 10 rows × 10 seats
Reserved wheelchair and companion areas are additional placeholders, not counted as numbered seats. An architect must calculate aisle widths, seat spacing, exit routes, accessible seating and legal occupancy. Your rabbi decides bimah placement and the women's section / mechitzah layout.
3. Contractor drawing package
Before a contractor can build, commission these coordinated documents—not just AI images.
- Site & existing conditions
- Measured survey, boundaries, utilities, parking, existing structure and zoning.
- Architectural drawings
- Dimensioned floor plans, elevations, sections, door schedules, accessibility and egress calculations.
- Structural drawings
- Foundation, load paths, framing and connections designed and signed by the structural engineer.
- Building services
- Coordinated electrical, lighting, ventilation, plumbing, fire protection and security designs.
- Sanctuary & learning fit-out
- Rabbi-reviewed orientation, Aron Kodesh, bimah, women's section, seating, shelves and book storage.
- Mikveh documentation
- Dedicated plans approved by a qualified rav and mikveh specialist; no construction from a generic diagram.
- Permits & specifications
- Local authority approval, material specifications, contractor scope, inspections and approved revisions.
4. Construction steps
1. Gather the community
Write down how many families will attend, what a minyan needs, and who will lead services and learning.
2. Speak with your local Orthodox rabbi first
He sets the halachic layout: Mizrach wall, Aron Kodesh, bimah, mechitzah or ezrat nashim, and whether a mikveh is possible on the site.
3. Check the property rules before you buy or lease
Ask the local municipality whether the address allows a house of assembly / place of worship, what parking is required, and what signage is permitted.
4. Hire a licensed architect and structural engineer
They draw the construction documents the permit office will accept and sign the structural and fire-safety work.
5. Plan for everyone who will walk in
Step-free entrance or ramp, door widths, accessible restroom, hearing and sight support, stroller and wheelchair space.
6. Design the mikveh with experts
A mikveh must be planned together with a qualified rav and a mikveh engineer — the water source and construction details decide whether it is valid.
7. Book the scribes and ritual items early
A sofer writes the mezuzot and, later, a Sefer Torah; ask the sofer or your rabbi where to buy kosher items.
8. Budget the practical costs
Insurance, security (lighting, locks, alarms), heating and cooling for a building used at set times, and ongoing upkeep.
9. Get permits before you build
Submit drawings, pay fees, schedule inspections; the work must match what was approved.
10. Dedicate the building
Plan chanukat habayit with the rabbi, the community and neighbours, and set the weekly learning schedule.
After permits: agree a signed scope and schedule, build according to approved documents, arrange required inspections, complete systems commissioning and obtain the local occupancy approval before opening.
